straight from the horses mouth

We do apologise for the unoriginality, but wanted to advise our followers tout de suite of Vogue USA's trend prediction for SS09 (that's SS09/10 for us poor souls).
  • Asymmetry - single shouldered dresses
  • Bows
  • Futurism
  • Eighties
  • Fringing
  • Gold

Get on to www.style.com for more.

A rose by any other name

Wine connoisseurs may scoff at the mere mention of rosé, but please, hear us out.

We know it's season of the sav blanc, and that chardonnay is a very distant memory of the 1990's. (We can't really remember as it was generally served at messy uni balls). But if you're anything like Girlin3184, there's only so many bottles of Oyster Bay you can quaff before it becomes a tad.....boring.

Rosé may be neither here nor there, but the light, fruity taste is something to be excited about.

Especially when your taste buds demand a change in scenery.

Now, Girlin3184 does not pretend to be a subject matter expert - we'll leave that to our friends at Gourmet Traveller.

Why spending $85 on eye liner is worth it

Myer Melbourne is undergoing a (badly required) $300 million overhaul.
At the entrance, one is greeted by shining dental white tiles and the alluring displays of various cosmetics houses - Mac, Benefit, Bobbi Brown, Chanel, Lancome, Kit, Mecca.....

Yes, it's heaven really.

Whilst biding her time between job interviews, Girlin3184 decided to go window shopping. However the innocent intent quickly turned in to an $85 transaction on eyeliner.

$85 on WHAT ?!

Yes, Girlin3184 who is currently unemployed, just spent her monthly phone bill on eyeliner.

Well, it was two separate items - long lasting noir eye gel and a high quality application brush (though neither are functional without the other).

The sales assistant explained it was the brand's best seller, and that a new shipment had just arrived after weeks of being out of stock.

That was it - the hard sell was over. Delighted, Girlin3184 stutted with confidence to her next interview - looking like a supermodel. Well, almost......

Buy online at www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com or instore at Myer, nationally.

Did someone say duct tape ?

Does anyone remember the very warped sci-fi flick, Fifth Element starring Milla Jovovich?

It seems Givenchy creative director, Riccardo Tisci was duly inspired whilst designing his SS09 collection.....
Victoria Beckham will be pleased to know that wet look leggings (and boots) are still very much the 'look de jour'. We're not sure about the angel wings though....

Past, Present & Future

Channel a little Middle Earth and 19th Century charm with Icelandic label Spaksmannsspjarir.

Designers Vala and Bjorg have created a classic utilitarain label, heavily consisting of dark and muted tones, rather than doggedly copying ever changing international trends.

Inspiration is drawn from the unique Iceland environment, its people and the eco fashion movement by using high quality textiles and small production runs.

Hauntingly elegant, HBTN draws a natural affinity with the Spaksmannsspjarir label, advocating that style and fashion are truly separate entities.

Win a stylist for the day

The truth be known, most people could do with a stylist. Even if it's just to tweak your (already) fabulous taste. Or.....like the majority of us, to assist with a complete wardrobe cull.

The only thing stopping most girls we know is the cost. Paying upwards of $500 per day leaves little left over for the most important part - shopping.

That's where Melbourne's 'Beck & Call Girl' steps in. For $165 you get a 3 hour consult, including a wardrobe cleanse, and your own strategic shopping profile. If you like, Beck can come shopping with you!

This month, Melbourne girls can WIN a style consult with their own 'Beck & Call Girl'. You can even elect to finish the session with a glass of champagne at your favourite hangout.

To win - email girlin3184@gmail.com advising us in 25 words or less why you need a stylist.

To contact Beck & Call Girl directly, ph 04 06 53 67 01 or email bandcgirl@gmail.com

Good Luck !

Scene Out: Celebrity Trends

We're not total slaves to the catwalk and celebrity trends. But seeing both dictate much of what you see in store, we've selected the most chic for your review. (Note, plaid did not make the cut. It's simply foul).

Citrus frills

Looking mighty fine in tangerine graduating layers are Maria Sharipova, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Szohr.

Gorgeous Gingham

Stepping out in America 'country cute' gingham are Kiera Knightly, Lauren Conrad & Teri Seymour.

Double stranded Pearls

Especially fabulous are Ashlee Simpson, SJP & Gwyneth Paltrow. Very classy indeed.

Grey t-shirt dress

Summer casual at it's finest here. Diane Kruger, Kristin Cavallari & Rachel Bilson nail 'effortlessly cool'. We love Rachel's trilby hat, too.

Sweetheart, I love you

Perfectly simple, perfectly innocent and perfectly sexy are Rumer Willis, Jessica Simpson & January Jones in a sweetheart neckline.

On the cuff

Boyfriend baggy and rolled cuffs are the look du jour, according to Amanda Peet, Katie Holmes & Rachel Bilson.

Cat walk

Anne Hathaway and Kim Kardashian put catwoman to shame in black wide leg jump suits.

Ripped off

Not since the 1990’s have ripped jeans ever been so cool.

At age 14, Girlin3184 remembers slicing in to a new pair of Levis, much to the horror of her screaming mother who bought them.

Fresh from Paris and Christophe Decarnin's Balmain (the inventor of fringed high-heel ankle boots) is the rock chic look revamped (again). Eighties meets nineties meets noughties, full of f-off attitude. This trend refuses to go away, and we're so excited!

Girlin3184 is tipping that you’ll see torn, faded denim jeans in every high street store very, very soon. We’re not sure about the square shoulder military jacket, but hey, that could grow on us (just like tie die did). And as for the studded gladiator heels – well, we’re forever in love.

Latex - a tight fit

Whether you hail or hate Victoria Beckham, her most recent outing at Macy's demands HBTN's attention.

Fashion bloggers and journalists alike have clamoured to break the news that latex is the new opaque (although Lara Zamiatin did mention it in Sunday Life last weekend).

But these are not tights, dear followers. Stuck to Victoria's slight frame are a pair of heel-less Antonio Berardi thigh-high latex boots. That's right, she's teetering on her toes like a ballerina.

At US$5900, we wont be maxing our credit cards any time soon - but we do hear that Supre have jumped on the bandwagon. Their PVC tights are just $25.

We also predict Vaseline sales to dramatically increase this season - how else do you expect to get them on?

Paspaley Polo in the City

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s tennis used to be the sport for the discerning middle and upper class.

My father often ridiculed the rough and tumble VFL by continually advocating that “football was for yobbos”. In recent years I’ve come to discover the pleasure of men in (tight) white shorts and realise he had a touch of misguided elitism. In a sense however, he was correct, the tennis crowd was simply different.

With the ensuing mass commercialisation (and I’m certainly not complaining) tennis has lost some of its refined glamour.

Similarly horse racing has lost its glossy sheen, largely due to the new generation of lads and ladettes who are more interested in dressing up and getting drunk rather than actually watching the horses.

So where’s a girl to enjoy sporting prowess in style? Cue then, the 2,000 year old game of polo. Much has been done in recent years to rid the sport of it’s stuffy reputation. Today, you can enjoy a civilised champagne or two and a gourmet afternoon tea in exquisite settings whilst watching the fastest ball game in the world.

If you’re sick of yobbo crowds and want something a little different, hop on to www.polointhecity.com for details of Pasplaey Polo in the City events in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Or alternatively, you may wish to hire a pony and take a lesson or two …..

Sweet about Sugartown x

It isn’t every day you come across an inconsequential hole in the wall and decide it’s one of your New Favourite Shopping Destinations (NFSD).

But that’s exactly what happened last Friday evening.

Driving past Camberwell station in Melbourne’s leafy east, a small shop caught Girlin3184’s eye – probably because of the ‘sale’ rack outside.

In a heart beat the car was parked and she scooted through the door, and in to the bowels of a fabulous vintage haven.

The sales assistant struck a perfect balance between laid back and sales focused as Girlin3184 combed through old world dresses, shirts, skirts and jewellery.

The sweetest thing about Sugar Town is the price.

Girlin3184 scored a fitted 80’s leather skirt for just $45, and a vintage inspired string of glass pearls and beads for $12.

She could have cleaned out the entire shop – but elected to spread the love with you, dear Followers.

brown & gold never looked so good

Ladies,

September 27 may be the only day brown and gold look good together, but what a fine sight it is. Twiggy would be proud.

Oh, we're a happy team at Hawthorn .....

Love, Girin3122 x

oh, what a trash bag!

Dear Followers,

You're very lucky. You see, Girlin3184 was almost taken out by a garbage truck at 4:30am this morning.

She had dropped boyfriend off at the MCG in his bid for grand final tickets, when the truck in front started driving on the right hand side of the road - coming towards the crest of a hill. Although it seemed rather odd, everything happened so quickly that she assumed the driver knew what s/he was doing. Then, without warning, the truck veered back to the left hand side of the road – narrowly missing Girlin3184.

%^&#ing idiot! (We think road rage is justified in this instance, don’t you?)

So ladies, please take care. There are trash bags out there.

Love, Girlin3184

PS Did you know that you can buy designer garbage bags? Unbelievable. We’d rather spend our money on shoes thanks.

Oh my goodness me!

Girlin3184 and Gosh Celebrity Fashion have a lot in common.

They both got bored with their day jobs and had plenty of time to shop online.

Girlin3184 started her own blog.

Gosh started an online store and is now one of the hottest places to go for celebrity inspired fashion.

We’re particularly excited about the dress worn by SJP in the opening scenes of SATC – the movie. You remember – the figure hugging number with the flower?

And who could forget the knockout emerald gown worn by Kiera Knightly in Atonement? That can be yours too, for $389.

The fabulous (faux) fur crop jacket in the style of Mary-Kate Olsen is a bargain at $99.95.

Delivery across Australia is a flat $8.50.

Ah yes, HBTN loves Gosh.

www.goshcelebrityfashion.com.au

5 mins with GOSH

Q What's the story behind the name?
A It's quite funny. I say "Oh my Gosh" to anything exciting that happens. I was so excited about creating an online store that I said it all the time. The name stuck.

Q Who is your favourite designer?
A Roberto Cavalli. I love clothing that makes a statement. The dresses are amazing - daring, sexy, elegant and compliment a woman's body.

Q You can only wear one item of clothing for the rest of your life. What is it?
A A jumpsuit !

Q Tell us about an up and coming designer we should know about.
A Sunnie Shin designs jewellery exclusively for GOSH. Her work has been featured in magazine photoshoots and has been worn by Australian celebs. She's soon to launch a collection in to the retail space, so keep an eye out!

Q Which celebrity would you love to shop at GOSH?
A Victoria Beckham would be amazing ! Although we're pretty pleased to have Kim Kardashian as a client.

Q What's this season's hottest trend?
A Playsuits and maxi dresses.

A one way ticket to fugly, please

This morning Girlin3184 found herself in a windy dustbowl, dressed in her very best suit and feeling very folorn.

Why? She’s still on the interview trail. Like a lone nomad, she trekked out to Melbourne’s west, which is basically the middle of industrial nowhere.

At the security entrance, Girl in 3184 was required to don a) protective eyewear b) goggles and c) a high visibility jacket. Then she was escorted across a heavy duty manufacturing plant.

Darn, why did she bother having a shower or straightening her hair?
Your lesson for the day is this dear followers - if you’re feeling fugly right now - fear not. At least you didn’t have blue collar workers gawking at your ridiculous fashion sense and dust filled glasses.

How fascinator-ing

Girls, the racing season is upon us. Then there's Christmas, New Year & parties galore.....

Which is why Melbournians should gallop in to Swish for the most delightful collection of afternoon & evening party wear.

Freshen up @ Mint

Who?
www.mintshop.com.au is an extension of the street front boutique in Manly, Sydney. Its popularity amongst locals and out of towners meant that the development of an online store was a natural progression. After all, many pilgrims were traveling several hours in Sydney traffic. I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing sexy about trying on skinny jeans after being stuck in a hot car.

What?
Mint Shop stocks a brilliant range of men and women’s apparel, combining well known and emerging designers.

From Arabella Ramsay to Kate Hurst, Ebony Eve, White Suede and Runway Lovers you’ll have trouble sticking to budget.

Mint says: ‘don’t do this’
The gals and guys @ Mint Shop know a thing or two about putting together the right look. Their do-not tip for the season – do not go overboard on fringing, particularly when it’s on a cowboy style bomber jacket.

Broaching the subject

Do not forget the power of accessories, dear followers.

Girlin3184 has been attending numerous job interviews, and wants to be remembered – for the right reasons. Recently she came across a brilliant vintage brooch at the local op-shop, and decided this was the perfect standout piece. It draws attention and exudes style, without being ostentatious or inappropriate. It’s also grabbed the positive attention of every interviewer so far.
Fashion wise, The Job Interview can be a tricky situation, and you’d be surprised how many people get it wrong. Having worked in recruitment for a number of years, Girlin3184 has seen (and smelt) it all – cleavage, jeans, scuffed shoes, BO, overpowering perfume, mismatched suits, chipped nail polish…the list is endless. Surely it’s a no brainer?

Unless you’re applying for a pole dancing position, err on the side of caution and ‘suit it’ up. Wash and blow-dry your hair. Wear a neutral nail polish or none at all. Leave the red lipstick for Saturday night, and keep makeup fresh and natural.

The era of power dressing is over, but it is important to look good. Melbourne styling agency Fashion Factor couldn’t put it better: “even if you don’t say a word, your appearance will”. Although you are expected to talk during an interview, a recruiter will form their first impression within 2 seconds of seeing you. Sound scary? It's The Truth.

Stressed? Follow HBTN.

Stress is to beauty as smoking is to your lungs.

Recently, Girlin3184’s cushy corporate job was made redundant, so she’s had lots of time to write. (You were wondering how she did it, right)?

Admist the tears, the frustration of job hunting and all of life’s daily pressures, the first signs of ageing started to appear – fine lines under her eyes. Panicked, Girlin3184 logged on to Ebay and swiftly purchased a tub of SKII.

We all know ageing is a fact of life, but there are many natural ways to stall the process. Such as getting enough sleep (which Girlin3184 is lacking). Meditating. Practicing yoga. Exercising. Quitting smoking. Drinking water. And reading HBTN.

We’re so glad you're doing the latter.

Halleluiah, FAT is in fashion

Girlin 3184 was plagued by puppy fat many, many years ago. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, mind you. When she reached the coveted size 0 (again, many, many years ago), it was the saddest time of her life.

Having fluctuated between sizes 8-14, she’s somewhere in the middle. Many in the industry would cite this as too heavy, but Girlin3184 is all about celebrating her curves and thinks you should too!

One of her male friends commented during Melbourne fashion week that the models were so thin he ‘wanted to vomit’. Pete’s perfectly straight in orientation (cute and single, too) so you can get back to your carbs. Woo Hoo! For an introduction, just shoot us an email ;)- (Side Note: we do apologise to those who are naturally thin.)

The kind of Fat we’d like to talk about today however, is of the retail kind, rather than the soft stuff.

Housing a wonderfully eclectic combination of avant-garde, contemporary and design school fashion, Fat has quickly established itself as one of Melbourne’s edgiest fashion boutiques.

Fat houses well known and independent designers including Cheap Monday, Bassike, Chronicles of Never, Kate Hurst, Ksubi, Lover, Nudie, Sass & Bide, TV (our favourite) and so many more...

From the quirky to cool, from the individual to the catwalk inspired, you’re bound to find something a little special to compliment your body type and style.

Will the 'new black' please stand up?!

We’re a tad confused and frustrated at HBTN. You see, everyone keeps on telling us that black is no longer black.

Um, the last time we looked, black was still the same – dark, mysterious, timeless and supremely elegant. Being a resident Melbournite, Girlin3184 says the key principal of fashion is this – you cannot go wrong with black, and nothing will ever substitute it. No other colour will ever make you look so slim, so chic or so feminine.

Coco Chanel knew a thing or two about fashion. Of all trends that have risen and fallen one thing has remained – the little black dress. Invented by the Madame herself, the LBD has adorned the frames of galactically famous women: Katharine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Catherine Denevue & Princess Di.

Even the Kings themselves – Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent remain/ed true to the timeless tradition of black – Lagerfeld is renowned for his entirely black collections and Saint Laurent for the industry defining “Le Smoking” suit which made a huge comeback at Paris fashion week.

Many ways to Mecca

Scoot, sashay, scurry, saunter, salsa – do whatever it takes to get in to Saba this spring.

Girlin3184 shopped up a storm at the Chadstone store on Saturday, swapping her credit card for delightful silk camisoles, and the most stylish of noir cigarette pants you’ll find this side of the catwalk.

Saba’s quality far surpasses that of its peers – and we checked out multiple retailers in pursuit of the ideal “sweet feminine” corporate wardrobe.

By far and away, the standout piece was an exquisite, fitted one shoulder silk dress, gloriously azure in colour, and tailored to compliment a variety of body types. Perfect for spring racing or a garden wedding.

Did we say skip? How are you getting to Saba?

Jump? How High?

The jumpsuit 'jumper' is going to be one of those tricky trends to get right. We’ve seen a high street retailer – name withheld – recently display a full trouser length jumpsuit with an elastic waist. Oh dear, if you want to look like a total victim, go ahead. This is an example of the fast fashion that’s clogging Western society landfill and keeping overseas workers very busy. (guess the last part’s a bonus).

Whilst browsing the glorious site http://www.madisonlosangeles.com/ , we came across a stylish silk jumpsuit by Vanessa Bruno. Tailored from 100% silk, the silhouette is flattering and the mid thigh pant could almost pass for a skirt. The ruffled neckline and décolletage is fabulously feminine, and the cinched belt really makes the suit look like a dress.

Our prediction is that jumpsuits will still be around next year. However, if you want to remain stylish and transcend try hard Gen Y pop fashion, slide in to silk, and make it short leg.

Complete the outfit ~

Accessory Watch: the new maternal instinct?

This morning at HBTN, we didn’t know whether to laugh or groan.

We’ve all heard about baby slings that hippy Earth mamma’s absolutely adore.

Now, you can buy puppy slings. Yes, that’s right, you heard correctly. A sling to carry to carry your DOG. Or cat. She can feel the warmth of your body and hear your heart beat. It’s just like having a real baby! But not.

We’re sure Paris Hilton will be Puppy Sling’s most lucrative customer. And all those women who love children but aren’t ready for the commitment. And women that don’t want children but treat their canines as if they were.

At HBTN, our bathroom cabinet is cluttered with oversized perfumes – Issey Miyake L’ea D’Issey, Christian Dior Baby Doll, DKNY Red Delicious, Chanel Chance, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lovely… the list goes on.

If only we’d discovered miniature perfumes sooner, we wouldn't be so broke!

Imagine having a perfume collection to rival your shoes. Minis makes it all affordable, and your signature scent can be changed (nearly) as often as your undies.

Yep, its a miracle alright - mini perfume. Check it out @ www.perfume.com.au

White hot nostalgia

If there’s one trend that’s whiter than hot, it’s vintage. There’s so much more to pulling off a glamourous vintage look than raiding your nana’s wardrobe. High on the nostalgia and chic-o-meter, the right vintage outfit creates a timeless look, one that can be worn again….and again…even amidst the flurry of disposable trends. Did we mention Top Shop is bringing the 80s back for SS09? And we’d just donated our knee-length t-shirts to Vinnies!

For the time poor, and I’m guessing its most of you, rummaging through op-shops across the city just isn’t gonna happen. So, Girlin3184 has compiled a list of the best vintage stores in Melbourne (Sydney’s on its way). Be prepared to pay more than op-shop prices – hey, someone has done the hard work for you.

Eat, Shop, Drink (in 3184, Melbourne)

Girlin3184 is currently reading the book all women have gone ga-ga over, Eat, Pray Love. Luckily, it’s not necessary to travel to India for one of life’s beautiful experiences.

Ormond Rd, Elwood (note, postcode 3184) is, for the most part, a ‘secret squirrel’ culinary and retail delight, that only bayside locals know.

EAT
The Turtle Café 34 Glen Huntley Rd
The service can be somewhat slow, but this is an Elwood institution. During summer the Turtle opens late for a chilled glass of wine or a honey chai latte.
De Cuba 69 Glen Huntley Rd
Modern and upbeat, de Cuba opens it’s French doors in summer and plays relaxed house tunes. Enjoy a reasonably priced meal from a wide international selection.

SHOP
Our eternal favourite, Red Dog 3 is located at 3 Ormond Rd (just up from the Turtle Café). This is THE place in Melbourne to head for affordable replicas of just about any catwalk trend you’ve seen. Housing labels such as Muui, Ladakh, I.D.S, you can walk out with an armful of clothing for less than two or three hundred dollars. The $20 sale rack is an absolute bargain, and you’ll love the accessories too.
Other places to check out for higher end designers include
Shuba 135 Ormond Rd Elwood
Miss Posh Boutique (a couple of doors down from Shuba)
Edwards in Love (just up from Shuba)

DRINK
The Collective, at 134 Ormond Rd is a long, narrow bar that often fills to capacity. Join the style conscious crowd for an imported beer.
Blue Tongue, at the far end of the village is an up market wine bar which again, is often filled to capacity.
We can’t omit the famous Elwood Lounge, a grungy pub located at 49-51 Glen Huntley Rd. More often than not you’ll find a local band strumming out tunes, and the very crusiy locals sucking back a pot. Or two.

From Colour to Karma, & everything in between

OPI is the polish on everyone’s tips (nails that is).

Girl in 3184 has loved wearing Russian Navy and Yoga-ta-get this blue over the AW period, but now it’s time to brighten up.

The India Collection is a sweet and spicy blend of colour, reminiscent of a foreign sunset over a darkening tropical beach. How can you resist the collection, with too cute names including Keys to My Karma (rich red), Get Me to the Taj on Time (ballerina pink), Charmed by a Snake (mushroom) and I’m India Mood for Live (shocking pink, pictured). Yep, we’re in love too. Ride your camel to David Jones or visit www.opi.net.au

If that’s not exotic enough, perhaps the Mod About Brights range will cure your Russian Navy blues. The It Colour (buttercup yellow) will brighten the darkest of spirits, and Green-wich Village makes even a Granny Smith seem dull. Our favourite however is Mod-ern Girl. The eye popping coral is this season’s must have, and accentuates even the palest of tans.

Hear the beating of the drums

Does anyone remember Brian Rochford? If you’re old enough, you’ll remember this label dominated the Australian swimwear market during the 80’s and 90’s, but somehow faded in to obscurity.

With a revamped name and brand, Rochford Australia has resurfaced, delivering ultra chic and exotic designs. Exuding style and confidence, each piece whisks you from urban reality, and places you in a private fantasy of creamy summer air, melodic tribal drums and nurturing tropical waters.

Find your signature piece at Myer www.myer.com.au and leading swimwear retailers.

I kissed a girl

Well, no I didn’t really. It’s the lyric of a very catchy tune, and I happen to love (almost) anything with cherry flavour. So that’s why I’ve complied a list of cherry-flavoured glosses to check out. Yum.

www.chapstick.com - we're not sure if it's available in Australia.
www.cheapcosmetics.com.au This divine site is a cross between www.missyconfidential.com.au and www.strawberrynet.com . It scours the Australian market to find discounted cosmetics, and then offers them to you in their online shop (or tells you where to get them). We found the following cherry-inspired glosses:

Left to Right
1. Stila lip glaze no 27 in black cherry
2. Clinique colour surge lip lacquer no 202 cherry spritzer
3. Sisley glossy lips 08 in cherry

Russh - a natural high

Teetering perfectly between mainstream and alternative, 2-monthly gloss mag Russh Australia delivers a supremely edgy fashion read. The emphasis is equally on international & local design, and from high end to high street, Russh covers it all www.russhaustralia.com .

In the words of Editor Natalie Shuker, the Russh girl 'is a raw beauty, a little off beat, graceful, comfortable in her own skin...a candid spirit and a piercing gaze that makes you take notice..' (September/October p 21). Just what we at HBTN aspire to. After all, imperfection is the new perfection (see "Close Encounters of the Third Kind, below).

Russh is available at all newsagents and whoever knows what they're selling. The only objection Girlin3184 has, is that 8 weeks is a terribly long time between editions. So keep on reading HBTN in the interim.

Just a little bit different

Here at HBTN, we’re suckers for things that are just a little bit different. We know it’s important to stay ahead of the fashion pack, to search for newly evolving looks, to identify emerging grassroots and international labels and then to pass them on to you, dear followers!

Danish site www.youheshe.com houses a collection of uber chich Nordic and European designers that are generally unknown in Australia. Mostly a smouldering collection of high end streetwear, YOU HE SHE also retails scarves (this season’s most chic accessory), handbags and jewellery. You’re bound to find something special, and most importantly something none of your friends have.

It can be a bit time consuming playing trial & error on the site (unless you speak Danish), but we guarantee you'll have fun !

No, I'm not pregnant

Last night at dinner, my girlfriend asked me if I was pregnant. With the horrified ‘no’ came a sly comment that my skin was glowing, just like a pregnant lady. I responded firmly that I’m not ‘up the duff’, but was wearing mineral makeup.

Surely by now you’ve heard about the mineral craze. So wonderful is this makeup that you can even sleep in it (every beautician’s nightmare) and wake up without a blemish in site. Of course we don’t recommend it, but you can do it.

So what is mineral makeup exactly? Essentially it's pure clay, broken down into a fine, powder form. With the lovely zinc oxides and titanium dioxides, you get natural sun protection sun protection too (remember chemistry class, anybody?). True mineral makeup does not contain any fillers (such as talc), and is kind to your skin, kind of like a nurturing 8 hr face mask.

These days, the majority of Australian women complain their skin is sensitive in one way or another.

Five years ago, Melbourne beauty entrepreneur Shauna Bell developed her increasingly renowned mineral label Skin Rich, see www.skinrich.com.au . Skin Rich delivers pure and natural skin care solutions, including a fabulous mineral range that does not aggravate even the most sensitive of skin. Better still; Skin Rich do not test on animals. Find it online, or visit the South Melbourne Market where Shauna still sells.

Read it and weep

OK, so it’s a book and not a fashion article. But this is something to read when you’re lazing about in your French @ home wear (see “Everyday Princess” below).

Evocative and heart breaking, Stolen Innocence by Elissa Wall is an autobiographical account of a young girl’s life in a fundamentalist religious sect. She is forced at age 14 to marry her first cousin and endures countless years of physical psychological and emotional abuse. Finally she meets a man who gives her the courage to break away. Then she file charges against the sect leader for forcing her to marry underage…….
buy it at any good bookstore or at www.amazon.com

WHO IS SHE?

The HBTN girl is smart and sophisticated. She is time poor and is on a need-to-know-now basis for chic and timeless trends. She’s a fan of high end and high street fashion. Just so long as it doesn’t look cheap, it doesn’t (always) matter where it’s from. She will invest in at ‘it’ bag, but is more than happy to browse through Vinnies or buy a pair of ballerina flats from Portmans. Glamour and elegance are of supreme importance, which is why she takes pride in her appearance. Stylish and edgy, she likes to experiment. From rock chic, corporate queen to glamorous diva, nothing is out of bounds.

Sportsgirl - Australia’s top shop

For anyone who’s made the trip to Mecca – ahem, I mean London for work or pleasure; you will invariably know Top Shop.

The queen of high street fashion, Top Shop has only very recently started shipping to Australia. But, if you’re like Girl in 3184, you get depressed at the sterling / dollar conversion, and that’s before they whack on a shipping fee.

Well girls, despair no longer, because Sportsgirl have opened their flagship store in Bourke St Melbourne.

A heady whirlwind of ‘must haves’ immediately compete for your attention, and stretches for at least 50 metres to the change rooms.

Bags, denim, scarves, jewellery, makeup, festival chic and 70s boho are strategically arranged to create individual mini boutiques, and encourage maximum spend.

It’s easy to become a fashion victim and succumb to the most fleeting of trends – but the best thing to do is check out www.sportsgirl.com.au , and make a pretty firm decision on what you want (or how much you’re prepared to spend). Then enjoy your experience in fashion retail heaven.

Deliciously romatic and flirty French lingerie label Princesse Tam Tam www.princessetamtam.com may not be available on Australian shores, but it’s definitely available online.

The phrase “French lingerie” alone instantly conjures image of gorgeous silks, lace, and infinite quality.
